Ok, this purely disgusts me, and some of you might've already heard about this, but for those of you who haven't, then here we go. Here's the article that I found in an e-mail, and a follow up that someone on my guide dog list said.
I don't normally get involved in dog rescue but this particular dog
has really tugged at my heartstrings.
A twelve year old female lab has been found wandering the streets of Frankfort, KY. Miah was trained by the Pilot Program in Columbus,
OH as a Seeing Eye Dog. Her last known owner was in Louisville but cannot be located. The dog has an expired rabies tag from Kenton County. The Pilot Program cannot take her back. All the local shelters have been contacted to no avail. No one has reported the
dog missing.
The dog has worked and served the human race her entire life. Now she needs a home for a year or two to finish out her life. Miah is beautifully trained which goes without saying. She will be vet checked before placement. She seems to be in good health.
A friend has this dog so if anyone is interested or knows someone
who is please contact me.

Here's the follow up that I got.
Folks, my thoughts, and only mine are the following:
I had read, when I was a party to the GDUI list for a short stint, that
Pilot doesn't take back its retired dogs but urges owners to adopt them out. I had also heard that there is a mandatory retirement policy, but won't belabor you with that point.
I had a question about why this lady knew the dog's name, and then thought about it and figured out that if there were a tag that was expired on the dog for rabies, then she might have checked with the county in which the dog lived.
The police could be contacted and they could very well go to the person's home who owned the dog as those records are easily accessed through the town clerk. However, there are too many holes in this story for me to pursue it. Let's hope that this story had a happy ending and a logical conclusion. ]
Not saying that this is untrue, but often these stories are circulated as pure hoaxes and they are like those stories of the kid with cancer appealing for money. You need to be careful as to which things you take stock in. I always try and check something out prior to submitting it for circulation.
Aww poor puppy.
I agree, it may or may not be true.
its true. I live in louisville and I no the guy who had her after they found her at least for a while. Not sure if he still has it. But my school is on frankfort avanew and I heard all about it. They refused to take her back noone would take her. it was sad.
how sad
awwwww this is so sad.
awww! Poor girl! That would never happen to my dog (ok most people wouldn't let that happen to a dog but yeah) Hope she now has a good home with lots of dog-lovers around.

Wow! this is truly horrible and a disgrace to the human race. What was wrong with the stupid owner that he couldn't just bring her to the police or even post an add in the newspaper? I'm sure there are many people who would love a sweet old dog. I really hope everything worked out for her. She really doesn't deserve this, especially after helping humanity her whole life.
No kidding, that's what I say. I love both of my dogs to death and I can't imagine after having a guide dog for that long that you'd just want to throw it out like a piece of old clothes. Sigh, people just purely disgust me. I hope it has a good home to.
What happened to the former owner? Clearly an expired rabies tag can be traced back to the owner of the dog. Unless the owner fell very ill or is dead, there is no excuse for this. If the owner just let the dog go for no reason, I hope they are one day left to starve to death somewhere. It would serve them right!
I agree with KC. Hope the dog gets a really good home to live out its days.
Anyone have an update on what has happened to the dog since this was posted?
